Severe storms, flash flooding forecast for Lackawanna County

Lackawanna County, Scranton, Pennsylvania, reports a weather alert from the National Weather Service warning of the potential for severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening with damaging winds. Brief heavy rain could also lead to localized flash flooding.

A rapid drop in temperatures is expected with the passage of a cold front tonight. Forecasters say temperatures could fall 20-25 degrees in just 3-5 hours, increasing the risk of a flash freeze.

Current hazards include wind advisories extended through 2 p.m. today over the western portion of the region; the Wyoming Valley and Poconos were added for this afternoon and evening.

Key messages from the National Weather Service indicate gusty winds diminishing slightly this morning but still in the 35 to 45 mph range, with stronger winds in the Poconos this evening behind the front. A line of strong to severe thunderstorms with damaging winds is expected this afternoon and evening as the cold front passes. Isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out, along with localized flash flooding. Rivers and streams are expected to rise into Tuesday. Temperatures will fall rapidly tonight, and lake-effect snow is expected to develop by late Tuesday, with winds remaining gusty.
