Cosmetology Student Explores Hair Structure Insights

Staff Report / Daytonalocal.org

Mary Foulk, a first-year Cosmetology student at Daytona State College in Daytona Beach, is studying the structure of hair by examining it under a microscope. This hands-on approach allows her to gain scientific insights into hair, which is composed of three main layers: the cuticle, cortex, and medulla, where melanin is found. Understanding these components is critical for cosmetologists, particularly when it comes to hair treatments, such as coloring. Knowledge of how hair dye penetrates the cortex and affects melanin helps cosmetologists make informed decisions about hair care.
