Traffic Signal Malfunctions: Safety Guidelines for Drivers
Staff Report / Daytonalocal.org
When faced with traffic signals that are not functioning, drivers should follow specific guidelines to ensure safety at intersections.
1. **No Signal Lights**: Treat the intersection as a four-way stop. All vehicles should come to a complete stop and proceed when it is safe to do so.
2. **Flashing Red Lights**: Treat these signals as stop signs. Drivers must stop completely and proceed only when it is safe.
3. **Flashing Yellow Lights**: Drivers should proceed with caution. They should only move forward when traffic allows for safe passage.
According to Florida law (Section 316.1235), when approaching an intersection with inoperative traffic lights, a driver is required to stop as they would at a stop intersection. If only some lights are malfunctioning, drivers should stop at the inoperative light.
Violating these rules may result in a noncriminal traffic infraction categorized as a moving violation, as stated in Chapter 318. For more information, residents of Daytona Beach can refer to the Daytona Beach Police Department.
